I have a Polaroid 240 land camera and I have purchased the battery for it, but it’s on back order, but the film is on the way. Will I still be able to use the camera without the battery? And what exactly is the battery used for?

I am thinking of getting new Polaroid camera, one that uses packfilm instead of the discontinued 600 integral film.
Before I buy a Reporter, however, I want to make sure that I can still get a battery for it.
